New Kick4Life programme promotes recycling, health and financial development

On April 6th, Kick4Life launched a weekly recycling service in selected neighborhoods around Maseru, Lesotho. This new service, known as Kick4Life OVC ReCYCLE Programme, is powered by OVCs (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) using bicycles & trailers to collect recyclables from subscribing customers.

The objective of this social enterprise is to provide an opportunity for OVC’s to earn funds to help get them off the streets & back into school. In launching this programme, Kick4Life is promoting recycling in Maseru, while providing disadvantaged youth with an opportunity to generate income for their school fees, books, uniforms, shoes & other basic living costs. Thanks to funding from the Embassy of the Republic of Germany, Pretoria, Kick4Life was able to purchase bicycles & trailers, in addition to holding a Road Safety Training Course.

After training OVC’s in Bicycle Road Safety, the recycling service was rolled out in several neighborhoods around Maseru. The programme is currently targeting the areas of Hillsview, Maseru West, Lower Thetsane, Friebel, & Florida. With the unveiling of this new programme, Maseru residents & business owners now have access to a home & business recycling service.

Interested residents & business owners can sign up for a weekly recycling collection by making a small monthly donation of M100 for households & M200 for businesses. This carbon-free collection process aims to reduce waste & pollution here in Maseru.

Kick4Life Head of Operation, Curtis Gardner, is pleased with the progress of the programme thus far, "In just a few months this project has already shown great potential. New customers are signing up and a lot of the kids we work with have expressed interest in becoming collectors” Said Gardner. "If you see these guys riding around Maseru during the week, please take care and show your support with a friendly honk because it's not easy work!"

Interested customers can sign up for this recycling service at their home or business by contacting recyclemaseru@gmail.org or by calling – 2231 2150.
