Mary Nakhumicha Zakayo, who first competed in the Paralympics in 1992, was awarded the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award alongside Ireland’s Michael McKillop during this year's Games in London.

Zakayo, who competed in the Javelin, Discus and Shot Put F57, and who also holds the World Paralympic record in Javelin F57, was honored for changing the face of Paralympic sport in the African Continent.

The two athletes were selected for exemplifying the best spirit of the Paralymypic Games and were awarded the medals on 9 September in the closing ceremony in London by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Zakayo, accompanied by Team Kenya who participated in this year's Paralympics, jetted into the country on Tuesday morning with a heroic welcome from Kenyans who flooded at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive the athletes.

The expression on her face would tell that Zakayo was a very happy woman to get such an honor, saying that the award will act as a motivator in her life and she will continue doing more for the country in the coming championships.

“I never expected that I can win such a prestigious award among the 4000 athletes that took part in the championship. I am very honoured and this will be my motivator to continue flying the Kenyan flag high in future. This will also bring more women in the sport because it will act as an example for the whole world,” said Zakayo.

Zakayo admitted that it was never easy during the Games but she thanks God for the great reward.

“The weather in London was not steady thus never easier for me during the championships but I am happy for this achievement so far and I thank God for the award,” added Zakayo.

Kenya was only represented by 14 athletes and managed to bring home seven medals.
