Journalism grants for creative reporting of development issues

The European Journalism Centre is accepting applications for journalism grants which will be given for innovative reporting of development issues.

The European Journalism Centre (EJC) has received financial support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to advance journalistic coverage of issues related to global development and the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals.

The grant programme aims to advance creative reporting approaches, enabling better coverage of development issues. Innovative reporting projects will be awarded considerable funding, with an aim to support journalists, editors, and development stakeholders to perform thorough research and develop new, exciting, and even experimental reporting, employing state of the art presentation methods and techniques of journalistic storytelling.

The opportunity is targetting applicants from, or linked to an organisation within, the eight European countries with the highest development spending: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

A maximum of 25-30 grants will be made in 2013. Applicants must apply for a minimum grant of €8,000 and it's expected that the average grant given will be about €20,000.

Many believe that sport for development doesn't get the attention it deserves from the mainstream media. This could be a great opportunity for journalists and relevant media organisations with experience or an interest in the field to highlight the way sport is being used as a vehicle for social change.

The deadline for applications is 25 March 2013. The first grants awarded will be announced in May 2013. Two more selection rounds will be run in the second half of 2013.
