IOC granted UN Observer Status at General Assembly Meeting

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been given observer status by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in recognition of their work towards achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals.
Observer status allow the IOC to promote sport at a higher level, by attending all UN General Assembly meetings.

Speaking of the newly granted status IOC President Jacques Rogge said:
“This is a huge recognition of the role sport can play in contributing to a better and more peaceful world. The Olympic values clearly match the UN’s philosophy. Today’s decision further strengthens the partnership between the IOC and the UN system.”

The UN General Assembly also adopted the Olympic Truce Resolution "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal", for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Resolution invites UN members States to promote peace before, during and after the Games
