On July 2nd, 21 boys’ teams and 8 girls’ teams took part in a five aside football tournament in Mafeteng, Lesotho. The tournament was organized by LENEPWHA and Skillshare to celebrate the World Cup in Africa and officially launch Coaching for Hope activities in Lesotho. All of the children in the tournament have been participating in football and HIV/AIDS sessions run by coaches who completed a Coaching for Hope workshop in April.
The football activities involving coaches trained by Coaching for Hope are operating within a LENEPWHA project that is being implemented in Mafeteng and Qacha’s Nek districts. The project is funded through the Big Lottery Fund in the UK and the football activities only make up one component of this multi-faceted project. The day began with a procession through Mafeteng involving coaches, players, and spectators carrying their team flags and blowing their vuvuzelas. In the end, the Netherlands came away victorious for the boys and the girls' championship was won by Cote d'Ivoire
In addition to the football matches, LENEPWHA was able to engage with a number of spectators and distribute information on HIV/AIDS prevention, as well as information on treatment and care. Additionally, thirty three people were able to go for testing and counseling at a Population Services International (PSI) tent that was set up at the event for the day.
