IAAF and Peace and Sport join forces to promote sport for peace

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Peace and Sport have signed a global partnership to implement joint programmes for peace-promotion and peace-building through sport in the world
On 21 July 2010 in Monaco the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and Peace and Sport signed an accord which will find the organizations working cooperatively.

Through the agreement, Peace and Sport will have its intervention capabilities strengthened by IAAF’s support, technical resources and expertise, in order to assist youth around the world.

The first IAAF-Peace and Sport joint operations to be identified are:
  • Programmes for education through sport organized in the Great Lakes region of Africa
  • Regulation organization of “Races for Peace” around the globe
  • Support for “Sport Solidarity for Haiti”

IAAF president Lamine Diack remarked, “Through this partnership with Peace and Sport, the IAAF reaffirms the social role of athletics and its determination to contribute actively to the development of the poorest communities in the world, promoting peace-education and a culture of peace.

This partnership will prove to be essential in helping promote peace through the use of sport in disadvantaged communities.
