Background Information

Once the FIFA Soccer World Cup begins in summer 2010, people all over the world will follow the events in South Africa. What they might not notice is the fact that 800-1000 people die there each day.

This is why Go Ahead! is organizing the kickHIV! campaign, bringing together people who want to combat this disease to collaborate on an innovative AIDS-educational project.

During the kickHIV! campaign days starting from May 28th-30th 2010, young people all over Germany are planning to raise money for the South African AIDS-educational project by organizing all sorts of different events, such as a yard sale, or a benefit concert. All donations will go to our partner project.

This project is built on the enormous popularity of soccer in South Africa, especially among children and teenagers.

Soccer coaches are well respected especially among young adults, and during soccer practice, children are more open to information about HIV than to conventional seminars in school. This approach was developed by South Africans a few years ago and has been successful ever since.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization and several universities have confirmed the effectiveness of this approach.By initiating as many events as possible and combining them with a large scale cross-media campaign we want to focus public interest in Germany to the offside of South Africa´s playing fields.

Who is Go Ahead! ?
Go Ahead! is a new, German, federally active organization. Its purpose is to finance educational projects for children orphaned by AIDS in South Africa and to raise awareness in Germany for the unfortunate situation of these children.

Go Ahead! is run by college students ever since its founding in 2007. We currently have 400 members and 70 of them actively work for the organization. In 2009, we raised over 140,000 Euros, which we sent to our local partners in South Africa without having to spend a single euro on extraneous costs.

Who is our local partner?
The realization of this project will be carried out by our reliable partner Heartbeat. Heartbeat has been our partner for some years and is an award-winning South African organization, renowned for its sustainable development approach.

More than 40,000 children in South Africa benefit from Heartbeat’s efforts which provide these children new opportunities in life.

How is the kickHIV!- campaign financed?
Continental, NewYorker and RWE are the main sponsors of the kickHIV!-campaign. Furthermore, we raised money for the kickHIV!-fundraiser through the online site, www.Charitystar.de.

100% of the money raised by the kickHIV! campaign is going directly to our project and not a single cent will be used for other costs!

Who supports kickHIV?
The idea behind the kickHIV- project has meanwhile convinced many German celebrities and public figures to help out in our project. Some of them have agreed to become the project’s ambassadors.

We are honored and proud to have the support of:
  • The German national soccer players Philip Lahm and Mesut Özil
  • The actors Coshma Shiva Hagen and Steffen Groth
  • Cassandra Steen, a talented young German singer
  • The Africa correspondent of the German Journal “Die Zeit” and author Bartholomäus Grill
  • The president of the young social democrats Franziska Dichsel

How can you help?
Get active! The whole concept of kickHIV! is based on the idea that people here in a wealthy and industrialized country help children who are by birth underprivileged, not in a traditional “money for food” way, but by raising awareness for the difficulties that these children have to struggle with.

We want to empower them to take care of themselves and others and we believe that there are others like you, who want to do the same.

Spreading the word of these alternative forms of help is one of the crucial of you can help kickHIV!. By organizing a little yard sale or a football tournament you can inform others about sustainable and effective forms of support for South Africa´s youth.
