Sport for Development Research Initiative

An in-depth analysis of six sport for development programmes has been conducted to explore the impact of their programmes. The main aim of the research project was to test the hypothesis:

‘sport contributes to the personal development and well-being of disadvantaged children and young people’.

The research project was funded by Comic Relief and UK Sport, and managed by IDS UK. It took place over three years (2007-2010).

A mix of ‘sport plus’ organisations (organisations that are primarily sports–based) and ‘plus sport’ organisations (who used sport as a tool for development as part of a bigger programme) were involved in the research project.

The organisations involved in the impact study included: Magic Bus (India); Praajak (India); SCORE (South Africa); The Kids League (Uganda); Kamwokya Christian Caring Community (KCCC) (Uganda); EMIMA (Tanzania). YMCA Senegal and Don Bosco Homes (Liberia) were also involved in the project.
