Sport and Gender

In general, there is a need for more research on gender-based sport-for-development programmes as there is a significant lack of published research, data and literature on such programmes in developing countries. Independent evaluations of such programmes are scarce or are not readily available.

A number of assumptions exist on the meaning and purpose of physical activity in the lives of women and girls in developing countries, which should be avoided. For example, it is inaccurate to assume that all women and girls in developing countries are physically inactive, as many perform tasks that require heavy physical exertion e.g. many women and girls in Egypt and Kenya spend hours walking each day as part of their domestic tasks.
