Today is the final day of the 12th World Sport for All Congress. A plenary session in the morning was followed by three parallel sessions on Olympic and Sports Movement’s involvement in Sport for All initiatives.

Mr. Gilbert Felli of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) moderated the plenary session in the morning and later gave a presentation about the newly-instituted Youth Olympic Games, which will be held for the first time in 2010 in Singapore.

“The Youth Olympics Games are not just a mini-Olympics” was one statement Mr Felli made during his presentation of the Youth Olympics concept. He emphasised the social and ‘legacy’ aspects of the Youth Olympics that will be enhanced by the ‘cultural and education programme’ (CEP) to be implemented in conjunction with the preparations and participation in the Youth Olympics.

Other presentations were made, including one about the ‘Peace and Sport’ programme in Djibouti and the International Military Sports Council (CISM), which has the seemingly contradictory vision: “to develop friendly relations between the armed forces of all countries through sports”.

The Congress drew to a close with a reading of the Congress Declaration. The Declaration makes a number of recommendations to National Olympic Committees, International Federations, other sports organisations, and government agencies for health, education and sport.

All in all, the Congress was a success and although it was not directly relevant to the field of Sport & Development in every sense, it provided a useful platform to reach out to sports actors with an interest in this area.
