Doc Wayne Youth Services, Inc. named 2014 Social Innovator by Massachusetts-based Root Cause, an institution dedicated to improving the performance of up and coming non-profit organisations.

On 10 December 2013, Doc Wayne Youth Services Inc., a US-based NGO with the mission of fusing sport and therapy to heal and strengthen youth, was honored to be accepted into the portfolio of Root Cause as a 2014 Social Innovator in the category of “Breaking Down Barriers to Effective Mental Health Services.” Root Cause is a Massachusetts-based institution that leverages corporate and foundation donor support to improve the performance of dynamic non-profit organisations throughout that state.

Sport for improved mental and behavioural health
While this distinction connotes exciting growth implications for Doc Wayne in a local context, it speaks more broadly to the recognition of sport as an effective medium for the amelioration of mental and behavioral health afflictions in youth. Doc Wayne’s youth interventions are based on the organisation’s unique do the good® curriculum which in turn is grounded in the psychology of dialectical behaviour therapy and the Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency Framework.

Proven positive change

This same curriculum was recently supported by empirical data published in the Journal of Family Violence which stated that do the good®-based interventions were proven to be as effective as traditional psychotherapy in producing positive behavioural change among youth living with mental health conditions. Support for Doc Wayne’s sports-based curriculum from both Root Cause and through the above-mentioned publication indicate the increasing seriousness with which sports-based interventions are being taken as potential solutions to normal and abnormal developmental challenges during adolescence.

Increasing recognition

The recognition of Doc Wayne’s sports-based therapy is one more coup in a growing global list of acknowledgements of the power of sport to effect social change. We at Doc Wayne hope that our growth inspires all in the sport and development family, just as your achievements likewise push us forward in our work.
