To mark Earth Day 2022, BBC Sport, in partnership with Sport Positive, have instituted four awards to celebrate individuals and organisations who are contributing to a more sustainable future through sport.

Sport Positive is delighted to announce that BBC Sport, in partnership with the Sport Positive Summit, will be celebrating individuals and organisations from across the globe who are actively contributing to a more sustainable future through their sporting profile and practises this October. The inaugural edition in 2022 will feature four awards:

  • Teamwork Award – for organisation of the year
  • Leadership Award – for education and engagement
  • Athlete of the Year
  • Young Athlete of the Year

The shortlist for the athlete awards will be announced by BBC Sport and winners will be selected by a panel of independent experts.

For the Leadership and Teamwork awards, organisations will be invited to submit their own nominations, with a shortlist chosen by BBC Sport and Sport Positive and winners selected by the same panel of independent experts. Alongside the Sport Positive Summit, award winners will be announced on 4 October to coincide with the next Sport Positive Summit at Wembley Stadium.

Claire Poole, CEO Sport Positive Summit, said: “Sports globally are accelerating efforts to reduce their impact on the environment, and playing an ever-larger role in advocating for collective action on climate change. There is still a huge amount of work to do, but these Awards will be a great moment to celebrate those leading the way, and encourage increased ambition on sustainability.”

Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport, said: “Through these awards, and in partnership with the Sport Positive Summit, BBC Sport will be highlighting the fantastic work happening around the world. Like the rest of the sports industry, we also have a duty to ensure we’re doing everything we can to reduce our impact on the environment, and by showcasing other’s efforts we hope this will inspire positive change.”
