From 17 to 28 August 2009 over 100 000 Australian youngsters will take part in physical activity to help promote greater awareness of diabetes.

This event is a part of the Turning to Sport for Good Health campaign which is a joint initiative between the Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-school Communities (AASC) program and Diabetes Australia.

The goal of this event is to reach a total of 1.5 million sporting passes, one for each Australians affected by diabetes.

Diabetes Australia promotes the message that through regular physical exercise and healthy eating habits, it is possible to lower the risk of contracting the disease. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form, accounting for 85–90 per cent of Australians with the disease.

Turning to Sport for Good Health campaign, is using fun and innovative ways to get children physically active. Although promoting traditional sports such as netball, basketball, football and hockey, other less mainstream activities like circus skills, dancing and martial arts are also being used.
