Sport has always been a significant part of Australia’s lifestyle and culture. They are working to ensure everyone benefits from involvement in sport.

Funding

At the Pacific Islands Forum, held in Cairns at the beginning of the month, the signing of a $4 million partnership was announced between Australia, the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) to support and improve sports-based programs for community development in the Pacific.

This was in conjunction with the Australian Government’s announcement of a commitment of over $25 million over five years to assist with the use of sport as a tool for development in the Pacific Region.

Homelessness - addressing social issues through sport
Australia prepared for another event on an international scale when they recently held their national Homeless Football Cup. From this tournament a team will be selected to compete at the Homeless World Cup in Milan in September.

Local initiatives
At a more local level a number of projects were launched involving the use of sport to promote social inclusion and healthy living. Australian Rugby Union have partnered with Australian Sports Commission’s Sports CONNECT program to ensure rugby can be accessed by all those who want to be involved.

Children across Australia have been involved this month in activities promoting physical activity, a healthy diet and awareness of diabetes. Read more about the Turning to Sport for Good Health campaign

Partnering to further understanding
The Australian Sports Commission has formed a partnership with Laureus Sport for Good Foundation to examine the use of sport with indigenous populations. A study will be undertaken to monitor the effectiveness of sporting activities with indigenous communities.

It is heartening to see a nation which enjoys sport realise the greater possibilities of sport and to invest time and money in promoting these opportunities both locally and internationally.
