BC Sport is an advocate for amateur sport across the province of British Columbia (BC), Canada.

BC Sport is a driving force in bringing healthy living and sport to the forefront of the people of BC. A report has been posted on their web site outlining the pros of being involved in sport as well as the cons of not being involved.

The report outlined the positive health effects of sport including the fact that children who take part in sport are much less likely to take up smoking. The report also refers to the social benefits of sport.

Here the report suggests that 95% of participants feel sport encourages people from different backgrounds to work and play together and 50% of active participants rate sport as very important for meeting new friends and socializing beyond the immediate family.

Other topics the report addresses include: volunteers & community, personal development, the economics of sport, crime reduction, and barriers to sport participation.

The report concludes by outlining the negatives of not being involved in sport. This section indicates that in Canada physical inactivity impacts health care costs as much as $5.3 billion annually.

Furthermore it states that 91% of Canadian children and youth are not meeting the recommended levels of physical activity.

The statistics make for interesting reading and should be thought provoking.
