The project targets social inclusion and cultural exchange among refugee women in Freiburg.

What is Bike Bridge Project?

Bike Bridge is a cycling project for female refugees and asylum seekers based in Freiburg, Germany. With an innovative concept, which includes theoretical and practical cycling courses, repair workshops, bike tours and excursions in the green city of Freiburg and its surroundings, it aims to increase mobility of girls and women and facilitate their social and cultural integration using bikes as tools.

In 2016, Bike Bridge started its pilot phase at the most populated refugee accommodation in Freiburg with 12 participants. After a successful implementation of the pilot phase, many women have shown interest and would like to participate in the project.

In 2017, Bike Bridge has been expanded to four refugee accommodations in Freiburg. In this season, more than 40 girls and women with migration backgrounds learn cycling and receive a bike, a helmet and a locker.

The Bike Bridge coordination team is very glad that the project has been nominated for the German Integration Prize (Deutscherintegrationpreis) of the non-profit Hertie Foundation (Gemeinnützigen Hertie-Stiftung).
