Botswana to host the IWG in 2014 – 2018

The International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) returns to the African continent after 16 years.

We are delighted to announce that the legal entity to host the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG) secretariat 2014 – 2018 and the seventh IWG World Conference on Women and Sport will be Botswana National Sport Council (BNSC). The IWG Co-Chair 2014 – 2018 will be Ms. Ruth Maphorisa. BNSC takes over the co-chairpersonship on September 1, 2014. The home city to the IWG Secretariat and the 7th IWG World Conference will be Gaborone, the capital of Botswana.

The Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) is the national umbrella body to all sports clubs, associations and federations in Botswana. The objectives of the BNSC are to promote sport within Botswana and participation in sport outside Botswana. BNSC is the entity responsible for coordination and facilitation of sport in Botswana, sport facilities development and management, resource mobilisation and appropriation, the promotion of sport, and international competitions.

I see this as a big opportunity for my country and for Africa, more especially for women in sports who have been working hard to make their voice heard. We see hosting IWG in Botswana not only as an opportunity for women in sports but for all the women. Women leaders in sports, business, education, and healthcare in Africa and the World will for the next four (4) years enjoy valuable lessons in dialogues and conversations about social responsibilities and social changes arising from women empowerment philosophy. During my time as Co-Chair, I will make sure countries do form networks, be part of IWG, and bring lots of African states to sign up with IWG and to report on progress from each continent on how states are progressing in advancing women in sports issues. I’m confident that Botswana will do a very good job in hosting IWG and in making sure IWG on Women and Sports is known and heard across all boarders of the world", says Ms. Ruth Maphorisa, IWG Co-Chair 2014 – 2018.

Women & Sport Botswana (WASBO) is a sub structure of the Botswana National Sports Council. It is the highest decision making body in Botswana on issues pertaining to Women and Sport. Botswana has been a very active participant at the IWG World Conferences throughout the 20 years, attending with some of the largest delegations.

The IWG is a global advocacy network that continues to grow with the help of thousands of dedicated women and men worldwide, united by a shared vision: a sustainable sporting culture based on gender equality that enables and values the full involvement of girls and women in every aspect of sport and physical activity. The hosting organization is elected for each four-year term, which ends with an IWG World Conference on Women and Sport. During the 20-year history, the IWG World Conferences have been organized in Brighton, UK (1994), Windhoek, Namibia (1998), Montreal, Canada (2002), Kumamoto, Japan (2006), and Sydney, Australia (2010). The 6th IWG World Conference takes place in Helsinki, Finland on June 12 – 15, 2014. The official handover ceremony will be organised during the 6th IWG World Conference Closing Session.
