International Inspiration, the UK led programme which aims to deliver the international promise made by the London bid team in Singapore, held an in-country launch in Brazil – one of five pilot countries – earlier this month.

On 3 November International Inspiration Brazil was offically launched in Recife, the capital city of Pernambuco, one of the eleven North Eastern States in which the programme is being delivered. the North East region. Both the UK Minister for the Olympics and Paralympics, Tessa Jowell, and the Brazilian Minister for sport, Orlando Silva, were present. A group of 50 children gathered to demonstrate the skills that they have developed as a result of Young Leader training – one of the initiatives being implemented through the programme.

International Inspiration aims to use the power of sport to transform the lives of millions of children and young people of all abilities, in schools and communities across the world, particularly in developing countries, through the power of high quality and inclusive physical education, sport and play, as part of the legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Work has been underway in the five pilot countries of Azerbaijan, Brazil, India, Palau and Zambia since 2007.

Led by UK Sport on behalf of the Government, International Inspiration is a collaboration of expertise in sport, development and education. Delivery partners are the British Council and UNICEF UK; with technical input from practitioners such as the Youth Sport Trust, Right To Play, sports federations and local expert NGOs. Further support also comes from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), the Department for International Development (DFID), the British Olympic Association (BOA), British Olympic Foundation (BOF) and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG). Funding has also been received from the Premier League.

In its first year, International Inspiration has already touched the lives of over 400,000 children in all eleven Semi-Arid states of Brazil. This has included the incorporation of a “Sports and Citizenship Social Participation Challenge” into the UNICEF Municipal Seal of Approval initiative and the development of 12 international links between schools in the North East region and schools in Nottinghamshire. Through these links the students and teachers will share innovations and best practice in physical education and school sport and will train inspirational young leaders to volunteer in their schools and communities.

UK Sport’s International Inspiration Director, Debbie Lye, is very pleased that Brazil has now officially recognised the programme.

"It is fantastic for International Inspiration in Brazil to have finally held its official launch in Recife,” she said. “The programme has been going from strength to strength since work started in the country, there is massive enthusiasm for it and it is already making a difference to people's lives. I am also delighted that Tessa Jowell was present to see the work first hand and to join our Brazilian colleagues in celebrating this important milestone."
