Call for articles: Sport and disability

With the 2015 Special Olympics World Games about to get underway and the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games on the horizon, we call for articles on the theme of sport and disability.

Using sport and adapted physical activity to promote the inclusion and rights of people with disabilities is receiving growing recognition worldwide. The popularity of the 2012 London Paralympics is a good example of how sport and disability is not only having an impact on an individual level, but it is also effecting wider social change.

For example, CEO of the British Paralympic Association, Tim Hollingsworth, recently shared that while 80% of spectators at the 2012 London Paralympics had never attended a Paralympic event prior to the 2012 Games, 98% of spectators said they would attend another Paralympics event in the future. He concluded, “Sport has the ability to show wider society that people with disabilities have the same ambitions as those without.”

Sport and adapted physical activity for people with mental disabilities is also receiving growing interest, as all eyes turn to Los Angeles for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.

Whether changing views towards people with disabilities in society via mega sporting events or providing access to sport and adapted physical activity at the grassroots, sport and disability is a broad theme that covers many topics, including:

  • Disability and gender / “the double discrimination”
  • Adapting sport and physical activity to ensure inclusion
  • Adapting sport equipment and infrastructure
  • Sport and victims of war

This is not an exhaustive list of topics linked to the theme. If you are interested in other topics related to sport and disability not listed above, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your idea.
