How do you view the role of physical activity in education?

The world recently celebrated the first International Day of Education on 24 January, "in celebration of the role of education for peace and development." In addition to raising awareness about the need to ensure every child attends school, the occasion also targets governments, aiming to ensure access to quality education is a leading policy priority.

UNICEF defines quality education as learning that guarantees the health and safety of students, aligns with national goals, teaches life skills and promotes positive participation in society.

Sport has an important role to play, whether directly through dedicated programmes pairing sport with learning objectives, or indirectly by promoting healthy development as an integral part of classroom learning.

sportanddev is calling on the community to reflect on the role of physical activity in education. Some questions to consider are:

  • How does sport contribute to achieving SDG 4 (Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all)?
  • How can sport be used to promote specific learning objectives, such as literacy and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects?
  • How will sport and play be used in the future, as aspects of interactive and non-traditional teaching methods?
  • How does sport play a role in adult learning programmes or vocational training?
  • How does sport hinder learning objectives or a safe school environment in some circumstances, and how can this be avoided?
