We are calling on organisations to share their approaches and insights in using sport to serve the needs of displaced women and girls (deadline extended to 21 November 2021).

According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), over 82 million people were forcibly displaced as of end-2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this crisis, disproportionately affecting displaced women and girls.

Sport can play an important role in protecting and promoting the rights of refugees, including by encouraging social inclusion, social cohesion and psychosocial wellbeing. If well designed, delivered and measured, sport-based programmes can also contribute to gender equity.

However, displaced women and girls continue to be marginalised in terms of access and opportunity in sport, though a range of important initiatives seek to tackle these obstacles.

Given this and to mark the International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October, the International Platform on Sport and Development (sportanddev) and UNHCR have launched a call for articles on empowering displaced women and girls in and through sport.

Send us your submissions

We would like organisations and individuals to share practical insights and approaches on how they have used sport to benefit displaced women and girls.

You may consider the following questions:

  • How have you increased participation of displaced women and girls in different settings?
  • How can sport be used to further the integration, empowerment, and social inclusion of displaced women and girls in different settings?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities in using sport with displaced women and girls?
  • What are common factors and approaches that may optimise the impact of such initiatives?
  • How can boys and men be engaged to tackle existing barriers and support displaced women and girls through sport?

We welcome submissions from a range of stakeholders across the sportanddev community.

We particularly encourage organisations and individuals from the Global South to submit their articles, including refugees and/or refugee-led actors. 85% of the world’s refugee population is hosted in countries of the Global South, and we would like your perspectives.

All contributions will be published on the sportanddev website and will appropriately credit contributors and their organisations. This call for articles will culminate in a Week of Action on this topic in mid-November, which will include an interactive webinar featuring key actors.

Send your contributions to Tariqa Tandon ([email protected]rg) by 21 November 2021.

Articles should:

  • Be 500-1,000 words long
  • Include a relevant photo in landscape (horizontal) orientation, for which you own the copyright, or is subject to some form of creative commons licence. If you do not have a picture, we will attempt to source one
  • Include a 1-2 sentence biography of the author(s)
  • Include links to any Twitter or Facebook accounts you would like associated with the post
  • Include links to any websites you would like associated with the post
