An opportunity to contribute to a study investigating how NGOs using sport in peace building measure effectiveness.

Background

There is a strong notion that sport is a universal language and that it can transcend borders, resulting in positive effects for those taking part and for the rest of society. One of sport’s major advantages as a development tool is that it’s a fun activity that is experienced in one form or another all over the world, making implementation relatively easy.

The use of sport in development provides an opportunity for different communities to experience sport as a tool that fosters non-violence, fair competition and teamwork. It assists in bridging cultural and ethnic divides and has the power to construct a common identity.

Sport involves a formal interaction and has its own set of norms and values. As such, participants construct their own social reality separate from society. This study aims to investigate how NGOs go about measuring these effects.

Aims of the study
The study seeks to:

  • Understand how NGOs design and implement their current monitoring and evaluation framework
  • Assess whether any improvement could be made to current frameworks
  • Evaluate the impact, if any, monitoring and evaluation has had on NGO intervention
  • Understand the perceived importance of monitoring and evaluation from the NGO perspective

Participant criteria

The study requires insight from people who have experience in designing or implementing monitoring and evaluation frameworks for NGOs that use sport in peace building. Only people who have experience of monitoring and evaluation should take part in this survey. The NGO in question should specifically promote the use of sport and physical activity to advance reconciliation and intercultural communication.

Participants will be expected to take part in a short questionnaire in English that should last no more than 20 minutes. The results will form part of a masters disseration conducted at the University College London in Global Governance and Ethics

Survey deadline: 5 August 2013
