International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2016: With 6 April fast approaching, we are asking you to share your plans with the community.

In August of 2013, the United Nations announced that 6 April would be commemorated as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP). Since then, the day has gone from strength to strength. Organisations around the world have celebrated with enthusiasm and high-profile figures from sport and politics have increasingly followed and commented on the day.

This year’s 6 April holds special significance, not only because it is the fifth IDSDP but also because it is the first since the closure of the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP), which was announced in May 2017. As the sport and development sector’s formal representation at the United Nations, the UNOSDP was one of the focal points for celebrations on 6 April.

However, the closure of the UNOSDP does not mean the momentum that the sport and development sector has achieved over the last 15 years has slowed down. The 2018 IDSDP gives us the opportunity to prove that, and to reflect on how we can move forward as a sector.

We would encourage you to organise an event, activity or campaign, to showcase what you are doing. As in previous years, we are collecting information on planned IDSDP activities to publish on sportanddev.org. Details of how you can submit your plans are below, and all contributions will be published when our IDSDP 2018 section is launched in the coming weeks.

Guidelines for submissions

To share your activities, please complete one or both of the following forms:

Submissions will be collected and published on the “Who’s doing what” page within the upcoming section. Those of you who can write in both English and French are encouraged to fill in both forms, to make the information more widely accessible.

Please include a photo with a credit and caption along with your submission. Photos should represent how you are celebrating the day.

Finally, if you have a website or event page you would like to share with the community, please include the link in your submission.
