The Bhubesi Pride Foundation in numbers: two expeditions, 36 coaches, nine countries, seven months.

The expeditions

The 2017 expeditions see Bhubesi Pride Foundation stronger than ever using sport for development and social change in schools and communities through Africa. Beginning in Nairobi in February for the first five-month expedition, the Pride journeyed from Kenya to Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and completing in South Africa. This was followed by the launch of the first Southern Africa Rugby Explorer (SARE) beginning in Botswana travelling on to Zambia, completing in Malawi - an eight-week expedition. So popular and successful, that we have extended SARE for 2018 to include Gauteng (South Africa) with a full 10-week duration.

Jacques Burger coaches with the Pride

We were thrilled to welcome former Namibian and Saracens legend, Jacques Burger. Featuring highlights and activities in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi, we catch up with the Pride during the first few months of this year’s expedition with a little help from our friend, Jacques, as we launch in Kenya.

And welcome to Marco Mama

Later in the project, professional rugby player, Marco Mama of Worcester Warriors, took time out from his off-season to head to Botswana and join ‘the Pride’. During his time with rugby charity, Bhubesi Pride Foundation, Marco linked up with rugby enthusiasts from all over the world to help run a coaching programme in the community. His deep African roots enabled Marco to ‘connect’ and inspire as he worked with children and young people.

The World’s Strongest Man contest was simultaneously taking place in Gaborone, providing much intrigue for anyone who appreciates lifting the occasional weight!

Our Malawi legacy

Contributing to Bhubesi Pride Foundation’s goal to inspire, the charity is working hard to initiate relevant and sustainable ‘legacy projects’ in Africa. These aim to complement the ongoing community programmes our volunteers (Pride members) are part of every year.

We’re creating and realising new ideas all the time. We hope to inspire you, your friends, colleagues and family to support us in making these amazing projects happen.

Join us to be part of something special

Rugby in Africa 2018 January to June is now completely full; however, we have a few places still available for our second expedition – SARE – July to September – and would particularly welcome applications from people over 25 and, come on ladies, we’d like more ‘girl power’!

Applications are now open for both 2019 expeditions. Applicants need to be 18 or over when joining a project.
