Right To Play is celebrating Global Dignity Day today and does so by sharing a video and a story about Minase, a young boy who overcame the exclusion he faced due to his disability.

Every day around the world millions of disadvantaged children have their rights and dignity violated. They live a life of humiliation and degradation, with little self-respect or self-worth. Fourteen-year-old Minase used to be one such child. Born with cerebral palsy in Ethiopia, a country where any form of disability means you are treated differently, Minase was ashamed of his disability.

At school he was worried that he would be mocked if he joined in games, so instead watched others from the sidelines.

When Minase started his new school and discovered Right To Play, he was initially still too afraid to particpate. After being told so many times that he couldn't, Minase lacked the confidence to think he could. "When the Coaches invited me to participate, I was not happy because I was not sure whether I could do sport activity," he remembers. "I feared that children would laugh at me when I was not able to perform well."

The Coaches persisted. Encouraged by the school's efforts to include people living with disabilities, Minase eventually realised that he should be treated with dignity and respect. He now joins in games, finding those which suit him. "Now I realise I can play with other children and don't fear that other children will make fun of me."

Minase has developed the confidence to compete and is a team player in sports. He also ran a 200m race with other children with disabilities – and won.

Dignity is a simple idea which has an incredible impact, which is why on 15 October, we are celebrating Global Dignity Day. This year, more than 44,000 children in our programmes are championing the importance of dignity by taking part in Play Day events and activities that teach the value of dignity in a fun, engaging way.
