CNN investigates if FIFA is delivering on its promise to use the World Cup as a means to raise HIV/AIDS awareness in South Africa.

In the first of three articles that will address social initiatives that have played a prominent role at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, CNN’s Ben Wyatt investigates whether FIFA is delivering on its promise to use the World Cup to address HIV/AIDS awareness in South Africa.

According to UNICEF figures gathered in 2007, six million people are living with HIV in South Africa.

Therefore, when South Africa was named host nation of the 2010 World Cup, many saw it as the perfect platform to promote safe sex and increase awareness and education about a disease that is, to a large degree, still a taboo subject in the region.
