While many S&D initiatives are directed at youth, CYSDP wants to put young people at the centre of sustainable development. In recognition of this ambition, sportanddev will be featuring a six-part article series from the group’s members on why SDP is an effective tool in tackling youth development issues. In this first article, the CYSDP outlines its position statement.

The Commonwealth Youth Sport for Development and Peace working group (CYSDP) was established in May 2013 by the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Composed of 10 youth practitioners in the field of sport for development and peace (SDP), the CYSDP aims to “Advocate, Educate and Demonstrate” for sport as a tool for youth development by engaging with young people and taking the youth voice to decision-makers.

One of the ways they are doing this is through their position statement. After being endorsed by Commonwealth sports ministers in July 2014, the CYSDP is urging governments, intergovernmental organisations, NGOs and other stakeholders in the SDP field to commit to:

  • Ensuring organisations have a functioning mechanism to involve youth in decision-making processes (e.g. youth committees, youth positions on boards of directors, feedback mechanisms for participants to organisational and national decision-makers)
  • Developing, implementing and/or engaging in youth-centred research in the SDP field
  • Providing education and training opportunities, using the CYSDP Advocacy Toolkit or other similar resources to encourage youth to become leaders and advocates for SDP in their countries

The CYSDP will be launching an Advocacy Toolkit in April 2015. The purpose of the toolkit will be to advance youth development through sport across the Commonwealth, by assisting young people to improve their ability to create awareness and influence decision as advocates of SDP.
