Community voice: Round three summary
The community was asked to respond to the following questions:
Main question - What is your vision for the sport and development community post-2015?
Sub questions - How can sport meet the challenges of post-2015 development? How can we more convincingly make the case that sport is an effective tool for development?
The following is a brief overview of several of the key ideas and arguments that emerged from the round:
On vision
• Use major sporting events as a way to fundraise for sector
• Focus on sport as a medium to bring about socio-economic changes
• Encourage wider youth participation in sport
• Become more professional and streamlined
On the challenges
• Ensure inter- and intra- personal development
• Less focus on skill level
• Governing sports bodies need to fulfil their mandate to ensure all youth can participate regularly in sport
• Clearly articulate the value of the sector to address specific development indicators
On making the case that sport is an effective tool for development
• Take a critical perspective on how much impact sport can have on development
• Channel more resources towards developing sport structures
• Coordinate between NGOs, private initiatives and federations
• Build evidence base
• Define common language and terminology as a sector
