This month, two entries have been highlighted in the connect section of the Platform: a programme aiming to address the trauma caused by the tsunami in Sri Lanka, and an innovative partnership between a Canadian University and the government of El Salvador.

This month, two entries have been highlighted illustrating how sports can contribute to development.

Building self-confidence through swimming classes
SwimLanka Trust partners with Terre des hommes to run a psycho-social programme aiming to consolidate the youth’s self-esteem in light of the trauma caused by the tsunami in December 2004. Basic swimming classes are provided to these youths, with the overall aim to have them overcome their fears towards the sea.

Visit the SwimLanka Trust entry on the Platform, take a look at their rehabilitation project description or get in touch with Justin Packman in case you’d like to know more about this initiative.

Partnering for development
Another interesting entry brings us to the Americas, with an innovative partnership between the Canadian Centre for Healthy Development through Sport and Physical Activity and the government of El Salvador. The Salud Escolar Integral programme uses physical education, sport and play to teach life skills, with a strong focus on conflict resolution.

Read more about the Salud Escolar Integral programme in the connect section. For more information, you can also get in touch with James Mandigo, from the Centre for Healthy Development through Sport and Physical Activity.
