From 1 August 2018 to 7 August 2018, student-athletes from Aruba, Dominican Republic and all over south Florida converged in Miami, Florida to participate in the second annual CourtVision International World Cup Hoops programme. The event was hosted by the non-profit organisation CourtVision International and the City of Miami.

CourtVision International is a Miami-based, but globally-operating NGO that uses sports, education and international exchange opportunities to prepare high school-aged students for leadership roles in their communities. Primarily, CourtVision International uses sports to empower participants with the conflict management and social skills required to excel in these leadership roles.

The aim of the World Cup Hoops programme is to bring together CourtVision International students from communities in the “tropics” (the Caribbean, Florida, and Central America), for sports competition, cross-border relationship-building, cultural exchange and educational development. During the week of programming, over sixty high school (teenage) students participated in multiple activities designed to challenge their social skills, their athletic ability and their vision for the futures of their communities. These activities included an international basketball tournament, multiple cultural exchange dinners, an educational seminar and panel talk, multiple unofficial college visits and lectures and visits to local cultural sites.

To host this event, CourtVision International teamed up with multiple local, youth-centred, non-profit organisations, using strategic partnerships with these civic institutions, and their areas of focus to provide a well-rounded, community-focused experience. These partners included 297 Strikers, a basketball programme from Aruba; FAB Sports, a youth development organisation from Little Havana, Miami; Be Strong International, a healthy relationship organisation from Miami; Motivation 4 Lyfe, a mental health non-profit from Miami; and Reaching Our Brothers Everywhere, a public health organisation from Atlanta/Miami. CourtVision International also invited multiple local professionals from the field of education, law and policy to challenge young people to find a “cause” that they care about, and use their position as students, athletes, and future leaders to make the world a better place.

CourtVision International now will facilitate a continuing programme with member students, and will be gearing up toward hosting a similar event in Aruba in the coming months.
