CSED Initiative to hold IDSDP event in IDP camp in Uhogua, Nigeria

Community Sport and Educational Development Initiative is hosting a sport event at an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Nigeria, to commemorate IDSDP 2021.

Community Sport and Educational Development (CSED) Initiative is a sport for change initiative based in Nigeria. On 6 April 2021, we plan to hold a sport themed event at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp in Uhogua, Edo state. The event will involve netball training, badminton training and football (penalty competition).

Before the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, CSED Initiative held different sports and educational events at this camp, which provides accommodation to about 5,000 residents who are victims of the Boko Haram insurgence in the North-East of Nigeria.

Key issues and priorities

The goals of this event is to use sports to provide psycho-social support to the camp residents, who currently live more than a thousand kilometres from their family home.

CSED Initiative and their supporters, including Lord Taverner’s and the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, will use this event to teach life skills, team work, leadership skills and peace education to the residents of the IDPs camp Uhogua.

Unlike asylum seekers, IDPs have been marginalized in terms of publicity and access to support by the national and international communities. We want to draw the attention of the relevant agencies to the plight of IDPs all over the world.

The residents of IDPs camp Uhogua are a good example of being successful even though life is hard and when you do not know when you are going to have your next meal. The IDPs EduSport Hub hopes to give the residents the opportunity to learn, grow with respect and achieve.

As of last year, 45 residents attend tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria. Furthermore, one of the residents of the camp is the first Nigerian female student to be certified as a coach by Netball Africa.
