Five reasons to celebrate the fifth International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP)

As 6 April approaches, let’s look at some reasons why you should celebrate.

1. You can bring visibility to your organisation

Being part of an international day with so many other organisations is a great way to highlight your work. You can join online campaigns by using the social media hashtags  #Sport2030 and #IDSDP2018, organise an event or share what you’re doing on There are a million ways to tell the world how you use sport to transform lives, so why not share your stories and introduce your work?

2. We have a lot to celebrate –  but also a long way to go

Every year, 6 April allows us to show the progress that has taken place in the last 12 months and recharge for the next year. Looking back at our accomplishments is important and gives us the motivation to go on; but it is also important to remember that we have a long way to go. So let’s celebrate our progress but also reflect on how we can improve in the future.

3. You will also be part of a global conversation

The IDSDP is a tool for advocacy. We have the potential to influence decision-makers and engage with a wider audience of potential supporters. Being part of the day means you are part of that conversation. You can have your voice heard, position yourself as a thought leader and influence the decisions that affect your work.

4. So let’s keep the momentum going….

With so much progress in the last few years, why stop here? Sport and development is gaining more and more players, so let’s keep it going. By raising awareness of the role of sport in development, the IDSDP can help to increase the number of programmes, organisations and people involved in the sector.

5. And remember that together we are stronger

If sports teach us anything, it is that teamwork is essential. Collaboration is as important for the small rural community programme as the international sports federation. So celebrate this day and join a global movement which will empower, motivate and keep you going. We all have a role to play, but we can accomplish more if we join forces.

So tell us, what are you planning to do for IDSDP 2018?
