Organisation proves global reach with resounding success of Sochi Camp 2010

This October, Generations For Peace successfully staged Sochi Camp 2010 – its first ever camp in Europe – in the Russian city of Sochi, host of the next Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2014.

57 delegates from 11 European and Central Asian countries underwent ten days of intensive training in the use of sport in conflict transformation via Generations For Peace’s unique five-module curriculum: Sport and Peace; Peace Building; Working with Children and Youth; Train the Trainers; and Advocacy and Partnerships. These modules were delivered through classroom and practical sports sessions by a team of inspirational facilitators and sports coaches.

Among the high-profile guest speakers imparting their wealth of experience to the delegates were: UN Special Advisor on Sport for Development and Peace, Wilfried Lemke; Dmitry Vityutnev from the Russian Ministry of Sport, Tourism and Youth Policy; double Olympic Champion, journalist and Generations For Peace Advisory Board member, Donna de Varona; internationally-renowned Olympic writer, Alan Abrahamson; and Editor of the influential Around The Rings magazine, Ed Hula. The official blogger for Sochi Camp 2010 was Kimiya Shokoohi, a graduate of the Young Reporter Programme from this year’s Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

The first Generations For Peace camp outside the Middle East offers further evidence that the organisation is achieving its global ambitions. Talks are also ongoing with countries in Latin America, Africa and the Far East about hosting camps in the near future.

Perhaps the greatest indication of Sochi Camp 2010’s significance was the line-up of international sporting and political figureheads at the gala dinner to celebrate the success of the camp. Generations For Peace founder and chairman, HRH Prince Feisal Al-Hussein, and its CEO, HRH Princess Sarah Al-Feisal, were joined by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation with responsibility for delivering the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Dmitry Kozak, President and CEO of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, Dmitry Chernyshenko, and Mayor of Sochi, Anatoly Pakhomov.

526 first generation delegates from 46 countries and territories across three continents have now embarked on the Generations For Peace Pioneer Certification Programme. With 3,100 second generation delegates and pioneers trained, and with the lives of 51,000 children already changed for the better, together, we are making a difference.

Generations For Peace – Pass it on!
