Celebrating the power of sport to drive social change will be at the fore of this year’s International Day of Sport for Development and Peace in Papua New Guinea on 6 April.

High Performance Sport Papua New Guinea (HPS PNG) will be hosting a day of sporting activities to get students outdoors.

HPS PNG have to date invited up to 10 tertiary institutions across the country.

Event Coordinator and HPS PNG Talent Pathway Coordinator Cornelius Papau said the objective of the event is to celebrate the power of sport to drive social change, community development and to foster peace and understanding.

As a partner with the PNG University Sports Association in nurturing and growing university sporting activities around Papua New Guinea, we are excited to fully support the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and Australian University Sport (AUS) in delivering its campaigns through UNESCO and UN proclaimed events,” Papau said.

Papau, also the FISU Oceania Regional Development Coordinator (PNG), added that the programme was first introduced by Kofi Annan in 2001 through the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP).

Its mandate is to coordinate the efforts undertaken by the United Nations in promoting sport in a systematic and coherent way as a means to contribute to the achievement of development and peace.” Papau added.

Institutions who have participated in previous events and have been invited to participate are the International Training Institute, Don Bosco Technological Institute, IEA TAFE College, Institute of Business Studies and University of Papua New Guinea while in Lae will see Lae Secondary School, Malahang Technical College, ITI-Lae and PNG University of Technology.

Other interested institutions can contact Papau by email: [email protected] or call +675-754-987-84.
