"We urgently need to reverse the inequality gap and lift people out of the grinding horror of poverty." On the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, Mel Young, president of the Homeless World Cup, argued for the prioritisation of collaboration to address poverty.

It is quite astonishing that in this day and age we still have poverty.

Poverty simply shouldn’t exist. The world has huge amounts of wealth but much of this is held by very few people. The rich get richer and the gap between rich and poor grows on a daily basis. As a result, the world is becoming unsustainable.

We urgently need to reverse the inequality gap and lift people out of the grinding horror of poverty. The advances we have made over the past 30 years in technology and communication have been incredible. Our creativity and innovation knows no bounds. Yet we struggle to use that same creativity and passion to end poverty in the world.

It is simply a question of all of us getting together and using our collective will to change the world and end poverty. And no, this is not a naïve thought and an impossible dream. We can do this if we want to because we all the wherewithal at our fingertips.

Sport has a role to play. Football is a particularly strong mechanism of involving excluded people and as a means of communication. The Homeless World Cup has proved this. It is just one example of the power of sport to create real change.

On this special day, the third annual International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, let’s all remember the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which will make the world a better place.

Let’s fight for Goal #1 and end poverty forever.
