IDSDP: boosting sports and community development programmes in a highly-deprived neighborhood

The Values & Sport organisation (Asociación Civil Valores y Deporte) in Argentina focuses on conducting development programmes through sports throughout Latin America. Their 2015 IDSDP events included a number of workshops and sporting events in an underserved community.

On 6  April, approximately 60 boys, girls and youngsters enjoyed an afternoon of team and value-oriented games, juggling workshops and football matches as well as a snack time at Barrio Carrillo's newly constructed Cruyff Court. The events were organised by the NGO Values & Sport (Asociacion Civil Valores y Deporte) in collaboration with the municipal authorities in Buenos Aires, the Cruyff Foundation and the Viktor Kee Foundation.

Key findings from this event included: the need to create programmes with a variety of activities to include youth of all ages; the importance of looking to teachers and community leaders for insight into what youth enjoy but also in how to advertise; and conducting a simple questionnaire in order to learn more about the needs of youth from their own perspectives.
