Inauguration of the 'Sport for All' area in Bélem

100 people visit the 'Sport for All' space and more than 1000 registered for the 'Run for Rights and Solidarity'

After the opening ceremony on the 27th January 2009 with the parade of 100,000 people from all over the world, who marched against discrimination, climate changes and the neo-liberal model, the World Social Forum (WSF) finally started in Belém. The Sport for All Area began its activities with huge success; hundreds of participants played all day on the two volleyball pitches, the football pitch and the traditional games area.

The Sport for All Area provides a speacial meeting and exchange point inside the Forum, where it is possible to build friendships and social cohesion using games, sports, and movement.

The Area was open throughout the WSF – till the 1st of February – and was also a stage for exhibition of capoeira, traditional music and dance. In the meantime, the registration for the 'Run for Rights and Solidarity' was opened and more than 3,000 people enjoyed the activities on the 31st of January 2009.

The race was a very important event because it provided a meeting point for the WSF participants and the people of Belém.
