Sport and Peace theme starts first in the kick-off to the IOC Forum...

The two-day IOC Forum on Sport, Peace and Development started off with the bang in Lausanne, Switzerland by focusing on the intriguing relationship between the role of sport in building peace.

IOC representatives including IOC Director General Urs Lacotte and IOC President Jacques Rogge were keen to stress in the positive role sports can play in promoting development and peace but that it should not be considered a panacea for the world's ills.

UN Special Advisor for Sport for Development and Peace, Wilfried Lemke, emphasised the valued relationship between the UN system and the IOC and informed the participants that the IOC has signed MOUs with at least 15 different UN Funds. He also emphasised the need for greater show of proof and hard evidence in 'what sport can do' to promote development and peace.

HRH Prince Faisal Al Hussein of Jordan stressed the duty of the Jordanian NOC to uphold the values of the Olympic Movement by fostering peace. He also highlighted the key aspects of the Generations for Peace initiative to go beyond being sustainable "but also self-perpetuating" through the cascading nature of their programmes. The next Generations for Peace camp takes place in one month in Jordan.

Brigadier General Gianni Gola gave an enthused presentation of the seemingly contradictory mission of the International Military Sports Council (CISM): to promote the spirit of friendship between armed forces and to promote peace; and stressed the involvement of soldiers in promoting peace through sport e.g. during the CISM Day Run.

Presentations from WarChild Uganda and the Somalian government highlighted the role of sport in programmes for young people affected by conflict in their countries.

Finally, an interesting programme from the International Olympic Truce Centre gave us a brief insight into plans for the future - to develop a manual for UN peace-keepers to be able to implement sports activities.
