Whilst attending the International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Sir Philip Craven met Ban Ki-moon and informed him about the latest progress within the Paralympic Movement including projects currently been implemented in developing countries to encourage people with an impairment to get involved in sport.

Sir Philip Craven also paid tribute to the support given to the IPC by Wilfried Lemke, the Special Advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, who visited the IPC's Bonn headquarters in Germany last October.

Appointed in March 2008 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Mr. Lemke's key responsibility is to promote sports as an instrument for development and peace, both within the United Nations system and externally.

As part of his UN mandate he has set as one of his top priorities the promotion and support of sport for people living with an impairment.

Sir Philip Craven, IPC President said: "It was a very good meeting with the Secretary General and the Special Advisor and I was grateful that both were able to meet me so I could update them on some of the great developments in the Paralympic Movement.

"Both were impressed with the extremely important development work that we are currently undertaking in encouraging more people around the world to participate in sport."

I also wanted to personally thank them both for the United Nations' support which means so much to me and the rest of the Paralympic family."

Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations Secretary General, said: "Paralympic Sport and the Paralympic Movement is doing an excellent job in supporting persons with a disability to play a full and active role in society. The International Paralympic Committee can count on my support and that of my Special advisor Wilfried Lemke."
