New player joins the sportanddev Steering Board

The International Platform on Sport and Development (sportanddev) is delighted to welcome the Foundation for Sport and Development and Peace (FSDP) in South Africa to its Steering Board.

The Steering Board is a leading group of governments, NGOs and sports associations that sets the strategic direction of sportanddev and contributes financially or in-kind to the platform. In return for their contributions, Steering Board members receive various benefits such as increased international visibility; credibility; access to key actors and groups; support and guidance; and knowledge sharing.

A key principle for sportanddev has been to ensure greater diversity among Steering Board members, including a more representative presence of those in the Global South where the majority of sport and development programmes tend to be delivered.

FSDP is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that provides an important voice from sub-Saharan Africa. Its mission is “to contribute to the understanding and advancement of sport as a tool for development, social change and peace through advocacy, education/training, community engagement and high quality research AND to the understanding, appreciation and application of Universal and Olympic values to advance the physical, social and economic development and wellbeing of our communities.”

Furthermore, FSDP boasts significant experience and expertise in the sector. FSDP Chair Professor Marion Keim is a leading academic in the field of sport and development and is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Education Commission Commission as well as a member of the Eminent Person group and advisor to the South African Minister of Sport and Recreation. The other members of FSDP also lend considerable expertise and the sportanddev operating team and the Steering Board are delighted with their addition.

FSDP join the current Steering Board members, whose contributions are gratefully acknowledged.

  • The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)
  • The Commonwealth Secretariat
  • The Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
  • Reach Out to Asia (ROTA)
  • The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation
  • The Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee (NIF)
  • The German Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ) (observer)

sportanddev is always interested in welcoming new organisations to the board if there is mutual benefit for both parties. The Steering Board meets physically once a year to discuss matters of importance, with regular contact maintained between meetings.
