A team of volunteer cyclists will ride on a tour to raise awareness of Europe's physical inactivity time bomb.

NowWeBike tour is part of the European campaign NowWeMOVE which aims to tackle physical inactivity amongst Europeans.

A recent study showed that the cost to the European economy of physical inactivity is over 80bn Euros per year, and inactivity is the 4th leading risk factor for global mortality. A team of four cyclists will begin the tour on the 24 July in Turkey, before finishing on the 9 September 2015 in Brussels. They will cross the borders of 12 countries, ride  for 47 days and will cover approximately 2,700 km.

"Cycling is an easy and popular way to stay healthy, as nowadays, many of us are not physically active enough. With NowWeBike cross-border tour we would like to encourage participation in sport and exercising by attracting citizens to be part of a pan-European activity. We want to bring the excitement of moving to more Europeans, as we believe that exercise works like a medicine and it is free and available for everyone." - Laska Nenova, European coordinator of NowWeMOVE.

NowWeBike is not just about one team travelling from 'A to B'. Their route to Brussels will be an interactive one, offering the public, the press and organisations a variety of ways to be part of the event. From “come and try” activities including BikeYoga, to active sightseeing tours and cultural visits, to press conferences, and city-to-city pro-am (professionals riding alongside amateurs) events. NowWeBike will feature side events designed to appeal to an array of tastes, abilities and professional interests.

sportanddev.org recently published an article breaking down the key findings of the report on Europe's physical inactivity crisis. You can read this article here and the full report by ISCA and the Centre for Economics and Business Research here.
