The Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) are to donate €100 for each of the 77 goals scored at UEFA EURO 2008™ to the UEFA/International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) humanitarian campaign, Score for the Red Cross.

Great honour

"It is a great honour not only for our association, but also for our players - who signed numerous Score for the Red Cross balls to boost the campaign - to be able to make a small contribution towards the campaign's success," said ÖFB general secretary Alfred Ludwig.

Landmine victims

The ICRC is using the funds raised by the campaign to help landmine victims in Afghanistan walk again. The provision of artificial limbs and gradual rehabilitation helps to restore lost dignity. The ICRC also facilitates reintegration into family and community life by offering vocational training and the possibility to start a small business. Half of the registered donations coming from residents of some of the 16 finalist countries will go to a project of their national Red Cross society.

UEFA support

For the first time, UEFA directly linked its support to what happens on the pitch - every goal scored during the finals, except in penalty shoot-outs, was worth a €4,000 donation.
