Does anyone know if there are any studies on the impact of the Olympics on local economies???

Very good question Pierre!
There have been many many studies analysing the economic impact of the Olympic Games and looking at particular aspects of the Games such as the impact on host cities, media revenue, utilisation of new sporting facilities and the athletes village after the games. Earlier this month, I was at the ICSEMIS Convention (the pre-Olympic scientific congress) and there were over a dozen presentations focussed on economic impact of the Beijing Olympic Games. You will find more information through the IOC website and their document archives www.olympic.org and for details of the specific sessions at the recent ICSEMIS Convention check out www.icsemis2008.org.
