Prince Albert II of Monaco inaugurated the 3rd edition of the Peace and Sport International Forum whilst emphasizing the irreplaceable role of sport to “reach out to others”.

“Sport enables us to be open to others in a spirit of mutual respect, tolerance and loyalty”

declared Prince Albert before an audience of many top-level sports people, government representatives, NGOs and members of the private sector.

Joël Bouzou, President and Founder of “Peace and Sport, L’Organisation pour la Paix et le Sport” spoke about the growing impact of the organization, which two years ago, at the Founding Forum attracted an audience of 180 delegates from 35 countries and today counted 440 delegates from 85 countries.

The Peace and Sport Forum will herald the announcement of the winners of the “2009 Peace and Sport Awards,” which recompense individuals and organizations to have made a particular contribution to peace through sport.

These Awards will be presented on Thursday evening during a Gala Dinner. They are destined for an International Sports Federation, an NGO, a corporation, a sports event and an outstanding image.

The image chosen as this year’s winner is a photograph from Agence France Presse.

It shows the granddaughter of German athlete Luz Long and the granddaughter of the American Champion Jesse Owens reunited alongside IAAF President Lamine Diack at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin during the medal-giving ceremony for Long Jump.

Amongst the decision-makers present at the Opening Ceremony; Danilo Turk, President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dmitry Kozak, Vice-Prime Minister of Russia, Rama Yade, French Sports Minister, and Prince Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Mr. Kozak announced that the Peace and Sport Forum 2012 would be held in Sochi, on the shores of the Black Sea. Sochi is the Host City of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
