Record Numbers for Grassroots Soccer Malawi

Each year HIV/ AIDS claims the lives of approximately 60 000 Malawians. During October Grassroots Soccer- Malawi (GRS Malawi) held record breaking events which will help stem the flow of the epidemic.

On 23rd October GRS Malawi held a half-day Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) tournament combining soccer, GRS activities, and HIV screening,  testing 215 people.

GRS, in conjunction with Baylor College of Medicine/Abbott Fund Centre of Excellence, then went onto test another 610 people during a massive community sensitization event attended by more than 4,000 people.

Over the 2 day period GRS tested a total of 825 people and made significant progress towards breaking down the stigma and fear attached to the testing process.

Speaking about the events, David Jones, Vice President of the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative, commented “there has not been a larger single HIV sensitization event organized in the country ever, or more people tested at a public event in one day.”
