Day 2 of the Beyond Sport Summit began with Rene Carayol, CEO of Inspired Leaders Networks and leadership guru.

Check out his site when you have a minute – www.carayol.com.

He spoke to 70 leaders from around the world, in the private, governmental, and third sectors about how they could possibly improve their skills – areas where they could develop in their own areas.

He opened with a key insight – management is different from leadership.

'Management is normally something we can outsource, but it’s been commoditised,' he said.
‘It’s leadership that makes the difference.’

Management has the factors of strategy, plans, tasks, and process. They are essential for the organisation not to fail. It’s the negative aspect of an organisation.

Management is what needs to be done, leadership is how one feels when they do it. Leadership is having a vision, knowing the culture, knowing your teams, and knowing the people around you.

For example, in this recession, management has been used. But  leadership is needed – optimism, a desire to improve.

Carayol stressed the fact that leaders need to let go- trust your people. There may be mistakes, but you have to let people take what you have taught them and lead by their own knowledge.

Carayol gave an example of former President Clinton as a great leader. He listened when no one else listened, and he provided individuals with motivation to do a good job and be active. Good leaders make those around them enthusiastic to work with simple actions and encouragements.
