The United Nations lauded the success of the 2010 World Cup and thanked South Africa for hosting a remarkable tournament

South Africa proved its doubters wrong by hosting a highly successful problem-free World Cup, as was noted in a United Nations (UN) press release:
“Irrespective of the result of the final, the real victor of the 2010 World Cup is Africa and the South African people” adding that the tournament “surpassed expectations, as the tournament took place in a positive spirit and safe environment for athletes, fans, observers, and local community members alike”

The UN also praised South Africa for effectively highlighting the myriad of development programs aimed at achieving the Millennium Development Goals, eight international development goals to be achieved by 2015.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was not only pleased with South African efforts, but also hopefully for the future adding, “It is my hope that the momentum that has been gained through the World Cup will carry through in the coming years and hopefully be amplified even further through the engagement of governments.”
