U of R summer program helping refugee children settle in Sask (Regina Leader-Post)
A program offered by the University of Regina, called Prairie Beginnings, is helping support to refugee children aged six to 12 who have arrived in Saskatchewan recently. The program began in 2016, as a response to the Syrian refugee crisis. Through the program, children are encouraged to acclimatize themselves to their new surroundings through crafts, sports and field trips.
Lewis Hamilton: Mercedes driver sends Ukrainian refugee wholesome gift bundle (Give Me Sport)
Lewis Hamilton was touched by the story of a Ukrainian eight-year-old who dreams of being an F1 driver in the future. After escaping from Ukraine to Poland, Roman and his mother were surprised with a package of presents by Hamilton, which included a note of support from Hamilton, among other things.
Young community leader rewarded for empowering refugee children through football (BBC)
At the recent Premier League 30th anniversary celebrations, Brooklyn Nixon was presented with the Community Captain Award by Leeds Football Club players Joe Gelhardt and Tyler Adams. Brooklyn, a member of the Leeds United Foundation, helps organise free football sessions for Syrian refugee children in the UK.
Ukrainian player signs for Ebbw Vale football club (The National Wales)
Ukrainian refugee Dmytrii Barduk noticed a football pitch when he arrived in Ebbw Vale, and asked to join the club for their training. He is now a registered player, and the rest of the team got together to get him a training kit, boots and pads, so that he feels part of the team.
