Sport and SDGs case study: Youth Empowerment Through Sport in Kenya (YES KENYA)
How does your organisation work toward achieving the SDGs?
YES Kenya is a sport for development organisation that provides youth with a safe haven where they can meet and share their experiences about life. YES uses organised game packages with specific themes to teach the youth on how they can take up the advantages that are within their environments.
Which specific goals do you target?
- Goal 3: Good health and well being for all people
- Goal 5: Gender Equality
- Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities
What changes have you made to your work since the SDGs were introduced in January 2016?
Through the interventions of our programme Play for Fun Learn for Life, YES in collaboration with Jhpiego has managed to reduce child mortality in Migori county by 10 percent. Additionally, we have also changed the lifestyle of youth that has positively impacted on their social lives and has contributed in reduced transmission of HIV/AIDS among adolescents.
How is your organisation measuring progress?
We work in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders in the health sector. We use the data from the Department of Health and Jhpiego to evaluate the progress records of the organisation. For instance the infant mortality records by the Ministry of Health helps us to evaluate the rate of infant deaths.
