International Israeli-German Conference on Sport for Development and Peace
13-17 September, 2011 - Wingate Institute, Israel

Since the UN General Assembly in 2003 has recognised sport as a means to reach the Millennium Development Goals, the role of sport for social development, conflict resolution, reconciliation and peace building has received increased attention.

Together with a team of international speakers, including both scientists and field experts, the partners of 'Sport as a Media between Cultures' wish to take stock of what has already been achieved, and explore the potential for future activities in this field.

Aiming to contribute to a better understanding of how sport can best be organised to help to facilitate mutual understanding within and between cultures and to promote conflict resolution and peace building, the conference, including pre-conference workshops, will include the following topics:

  • Analysis of the potential of sport, physical education, play and movement in development and conflict settings;
  • Benefits through intercultural cooperation in sport;
  • Development of projects on the basis of local needs;
  • Development of project structures to facilitate and to link development initiatives with existing societal structures;
  • Methods of evaluation of sport activities in different regions around the world;
  • University programmes and academic training;
  • Exploring the potential for future local and regional projects.

In addition to the scientific programme, social side events including field trips to sport for development, community building and peace projects in Israel will be organised.

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, Israel, and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Germany, the conference will be jointly implemented by the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), Wingate Institute and Zinman College, in cooperation with the Ministry of Regional Cooperation, Israel, the Federal Institute of Sport Science, Germany, and Football for Peace International.
